What Is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal treatment permanently removes unwanted dark hair or reduces hair density. It can be used on any part of the body except for around the eyes.

We see many clients who have come to us after 10 or more treatments at clinics offering cheap packages without seeing desired results.  It is highly important to understand the underlying factors that impact the effectiveness of Laser Hair Removal.

1. The Equipment

Even amongst medically proven equipment there are huge differences. Most come with recommended presets and customisable presets. The ability to use the customisable presets depends on the level of training, and many cheaper clinics do not provide this, which explains why so many more treatments are needed.

At Advanced Body Image, we use the Lumenis LightSheer Duet, a highly advanced and medically tested diode laser technology that enables greater depth of penetration and pain reduction, improving the energy absorption on the target follicles.

2. Hair and skin type

Many factors impact the number of treatments and the effectiveness of treatment including:

  • the colour and thickness of the hairs being treated. While light hairs will soften, they will never be removed through laser hair removal.
  • The colour of your skin. Unfortunately this is all about pigment and how this works with the light.

3. Staff training

Understanding how the hair follicles work and how the wavelengths can be used significantly influences the outcome and safety of laser hair removal. Our therapists only offer treatments in their area of expertise and are focused on delivering you the safest results in the shortest number of treatments. We prefer quality over profit and understand that your time is precious –getting results sooner is why we choose our equipment and staff carefully.

4. Wavelength

Even with medically proven lasers the result or success of your treatment is dependant on the specific wavelength of light each laser emits, the energy used to treat the area and the training of the operator. If the amount of energy the skin or hair receives is too low the results won’t be the same. Instead of needing 4-6 treatments in total you may need 15 plus treatments and still not experience the same end result.

At Advanced Body Image we employ different lasers to treat specific conditions, the lasers have been carefully selected because of their design, intensity of energy, wavelength of light and safety mechanisms. Our therapists only offer treatments in their area of expertise and are focused on delivering you the safest results in the shortest number of treatments.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Advanced Body Images uses the High Speed LightSheer DUET, state-of- the-art diode lasers with vacuum-assist technology to remove unwanted hair and with greater speed and comfort than other methods.

The High Speed LightSheer DUET is a laser that produces a larger beam of highly concentrated light. The light emitted is well absorbed by the pigment located in the hair follicles. During the procedure, the laser pulses for a fraction of a second, allowing the hair to absorb the light and heat up. As it heats up, the hair shaft and bulb are damaged which significantly impedes its ability to re-grow. And with the large spot size, the process treats numerous hair follicles simultaneously, making the treatment much faster than traditional laser hair removal alternatives.

Different handpieces are used depening on your needs. The LightSheer High Speed handpiece uses breakthrough vacuum assisted technology in combination with diode laser light to allow rapid and comfortable treatment of large areas. A back or legs can now be treated in 15 to 20 minutes, without the need for topical numbing creams.

The LightSheer DUET also offers the gold standard LightSheer ETTM handpiece with ChillTip® cooling for smaller areas, allowing us to truly customize treatment for your hair type, skin type and lifestyle.

What To Expect?

Many people describe laser hair removal as feeling like a rubber band being flicked onto the skin – very painless for many but uncomfortable for some.

Side effects are rare and, if they do occur, are typically minor. They may include redness and swelling around the hair follicle, which are, in fact, positive clinical results and indicate that the follicle has responded to treatment. Most people return to normal activity right away.

Laser hair removal requires multiple treatments. This is because the laser works best when hairs are in an early growth stage (referred to as anagen), and all the hairs are not in this phase at the same time.
