How Ultherapy can help

A gradual, natural-looking lift without surgery

Ultherapy may help lift a suitable lowered brow, firm the appearance beneath the chin and through the neck, and soften lines across the décolletage. It is designed for gradual, natural-looking improvement without incisions, injections or planned surgical recovery.

The original Ulthera® System combines micro-focused ultrasound energy with DeepSEE® real-time imaging. We can see the relevant tissue layers on screen, check contact and select the appropriate depth instead of relying only on what is visible at the surface.

Treatment lines create tiny, precise points of heat within collagen-rich tissue beneath the skin. Your natural healing response then builds and reorganises collagen over the following months, which is why the lifting and firming effect develops progressively rather than immediately.

How Ultherapy works

We see the tissue before delivering each treatment line

Different transducers focus the ultrasound at selected depths. Real-time imaging helps us choose the layer that suits your anatomy; not every depth is used in every area or on every client.

1.5 mm

Superficial dermis

Used selectively where a more superficial collagen-rich layer is appropriate.

Simplified illustration of ultrasound energy focused at 3 millimetres in the deep dermis
3.0 mm

Deep dermis

Targets a deeper layer according to tissue thickness and the treatment plan.

Simplified illustration of ultrasound energy focused at 4.5 millimetres in the deeper fibromuscular support layer
4.5 mm

Deeper support layer

Can reach the deeper fibromuscular support layer where anatomy and imaging allow.

Simplified educational illustrations. Tissue thickness and anatomy vary, so treatment depth is selected after real-time imaging and assessment.

What Ultherapy may improve

Lift and firmness for selected areas of the face, neck and chest

Ultherapy may lift the eyebrow, firm suitable lax tissue beneath the chin and through the neck, and improve lines and wrinkles across the décolletage.

Who may be suitable?

Mild to moderate laxity—and realistic expectations

Ultherapy may be considered when the eyebrow sits lower, tissue beneath the chin or through the neck has become less firm, or lines are developing across the upper chest. It can suit adults who prefer gradual, non-invasive improvement and do not want surgical recovery.

It is not a substitute for a facelift, does not remove excess skin and does not replace lost facial volume. Marked laxity, significant volume loss or a desire for immediate dramatic change may call for another option or medical referral.

Before

Assessment and planning

We assess your concern, degree of laxity, medical history, medicines, previous procedures, fillers and implants. Standardised photography supports planning and follow-up. You receive an individual recommendation and quote before proceeding.

During

Imaging, mapping and treatment

The skin is cleansed and mapped, ultrasound gel is applied and tissue is visualised before treatment lines are delivered. You may feel heat, tingling, prickling or a brief deep ache. Face and neck appointments often take around 60–90 minutes.

After

Normal activity, gradual results

Most clients return to usual activities immediately. Temporary effects can occur. Collagen remodelling takes time, with visible change commonly developing over two to three months. Individual results vary.

Longevity

Results may last up to 12 months, although individual longevity varies.

Downtime

No planned recovery period for most clients, although temporary effects can occur.

The degree of change varies with baseline laxity, age, tissue quality, treatment plan and biological response. Ultherapy does not stop ageing or guarantee a particular result.

Safety and suitability

Important information before you book

Ultherapy must not be used over:

  • Open wounds or lesions in the treatment area
  • Severe or cystic acne in the treatment area
  • Active implants such as pacemakers or defibrillators, or metallic implants, in the treatment area

Please tell us about:

Pregnancy or breastfeeding; medicines that affect bleeding; mechanical or breast implants; dermal fillers; keloid scarring; herpes simplex; autoimmune disease; diabetes; epilepsy; Bell's palsy; bleeding disorders; or any active condition that may affect healing. These require careful assessment, and some populations have not been evaluated in the instructions for use.

Possible effects and risks

Common short-term effects include redness, swelling, welting, tenderness, pain, tingling, numbness or bruising. Temporary nerve inflammation can cause altered sensation or local muscle weakness. Burns, blisters, nodules, pigment change, scarring, asymmetry, fat or volume loss and longer-lasting nerve effects have been reported after market use. Your practitioner will discuss relevant risks, warning signs and aftercare before consent.

Frequently asked questions

Ultherapy questions, answered clearly

What is Ultherapy?

Ultherapy is the branded treatment delivered by the original Ulthera System. It combines micro-focused ultrasound energy with real-time DeepSEE ultrasound imaging. The imaging helps the practitioner see tissue layers and confirm treatment depth before delivering energy to selected collagen-rich tissue.

Is Ultherapy the same as HIFU?

Ultherapy belongs to the broader focused-ultrasound category, but it is a specific medical device and treatment protocol. A defining feature is real-time ultrasound visualisation, which allows tissue depth, coupling and anatomy to be assessed on screen. Devices marketed simply as HIFU are not automatically equivalent to the Ulthera System.

Can Ultherapy replace a facelift?

No. Ultherapy can create a gradual, non-surgical improvement in suitable mild-to-moderate laxity, but it does not remove excess skin, reposition tissue like surgery or replace lost facial volume. Clients wanting a dramatic or immediate change may require a different pathway.

Does Ultherapy hurt?

Sensation varies. During energy delivery you may feel heat, tingling, prickling or a brief deep ache. Treatment settings, anatomy and individual sensitivity all influence comfort. We explain comfort measures and what to expect before treatment begins.

How many Ultherapy treatments will I need?

Many suitable clients have one treatment. Whether another session is appropriate depends on baseline laxity, treatment area, response, ageing and your goals. More treatment is not automatically better; reassessment should guide the decision.

When will I see Ultherapy results?

Some clients notice an early change, but the main response is gradual. Collagen remodelling commonly becomes more visible over two to three months. Photography and review appointments are more reliable than judging day-to-day changes in the mirror.

How long do Ultherapy results last?

The manufacturer states that results may last up to 12 months. Longevity varies with age, tissue quality, treatment plan, lifestyle and the individual collagen response. Ultherapy does not stop the normal ageing process.

Is there downtime after Ultherapy?

There is usually no planned recovery period and most clients return to normal activities immediately. Temporary redness, swelling, welting, tenderness, bruising, tingling or numbness can occur, so no-downtime does not mean no side effects.

Is Ultherapy suitable for every skin tone?

The original Ulthera System instructions describe the intended population as adults of all Fitzpatrick skin types. Suitability still depends on anatomy, the concern, medical history, medicines, implants and previous treatment—not skin tone alone.

How much does Ultherapy cost in Darwin?

Advanced Body Image currently lists face and jaw at $4,700, face and neck at $5,500, and chest at $2,600. Consultation is required to confirm the correct area, suitability and current quote before treatment.
