How this treatment can help

Why choose Cutera Enlighten III for tattoo removal?

When you’re ready to move on from a tattoo, the technology you choose matters. At Advanced Body Image in Darwin, our Cutera Enlighten III combines ultra-fast picosecond technology, three targeted wavelengths and two pulse durations to tackle the challenges that make tattoo removal difficult—from dense black ink to stubborn colours and tattoos that have resisted previous treatment. This versatility allows us to tailor treatment to your tattoo’s individual characteristics.

Its picosecond pulses deliver an exceptionally brief burst of energy that shatters tattoo pigment into smaller fragments, which your body gradually clears. The combination of picosecond and nanosecond settings gives us flexibility to address different ink particle sizes and densities as treatment progresses.

Colour is where its versatility really counts. Different inks respond to different wavelengths. Enlighten III provides dedicated options for dark inks, red tones and difficult blue and green pigments—giving us more ways to target the colours within your tattoo, subject to your skin type and suitability.

Whether you want to work towards removal or lighten an existing tattoo for a cover-up, we’ll assess your skin, ink and goals to create a personalised treatment plan.

Book your tattoo removal consultation and quote—and discover what’s possible for your skin.

Multiple sessions are usually required. Results vary, and complete removal cannot be guaranteed.

Your treatment experience

What the treatment process looks like

01

Before

We photograph and assess the tattoo, skin tone, ink colours, density, layers, location and healing history. Avoid tanning and fake tan, and disclose medicines and scar problems.

02

During

Protective eyewear is essential. We select the wavelength and pulse duration for the target pigment. Cooling and wound-care preparation are used as appropriate.

03

After

The area may whiten, swell, blister or form a light crust. Follow wound care exactly, do not pick and protect the area from sun while it heals before the next session.

Before treatment

What we check

Please tell us about previous healing problems, infection, raised scar tissue, medications and any change in the tattooed area. Newer tattoos may need time to mature before treatment.

Avoid tanning and fake tan on the treatment area. We will confirm preparation, eye protection, expected skin response and aftercare.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions, answered clearly

These answers explain the general experience. Your consultation is where we confirm what is appropriate for your skin, health and goals.

How many laser tattoo removal sessions will I need?

There is no reliable universal number. Ink colour, depth, density, tattoo age, location, cover-up layers, immune response and treatment interval all affect the course. A series is usually required.

Can every tattoo be completely removed?

No. Many tattoos fade substantially, but complete clearance cannot be guaranteed. Some pigments change colour or respond poorly, and residual pigment or a visible outline can remain.

Why are different wavelengths used?

Different ink colours absorb different wavelengths. Enlighten III provides 532, 1064 and 670 nm options plus picosecond and nanosecond pulse durations, allowing treatment to be selected around the pigment present.

How long between sessions?

The skin must fully heal and the body needs time to process fragmented pigment. The interval is set after each review and may lengthen as treatment progresses.

Does tattoo removal scar?

Scarring is possible but uncommon with appropriate treatment and aftercare. Pre-existing tattoo scarring, infection, picking, excessive settings and individual scar tendency can increase risk.

Can cosmetic tattoo pigment be removed?

Cosmetic pigments need specialist assessment because some contain compounds that can darken or change colour with laser. A test area or another pathway may be recommended.

Personalised professional care

Experience matters when treatment is personal

Our qualified and experienced team starts with what concerns you, then selects the treatment, technique and settings around your skin or body—not a one-size-fits-all menu.

Tattoo removal can cause temporary redness, swelling, pinpoint bleeding, blistering or crusting. Pigment change, textural change and scarring are possible. We will explain individual risks and aftercare.
