Katy Sullivan has specialised in cosmetic tattooing since 2000 and holds the highest cosmetic tattoo qualification available in Australia. With 26 years of practical experience and thousands of procedures performed, she brings extensive knowledge and individually considered design to cosmetic and paramedical tattooing.

After beginning her cosmetic tattoo education in 2000, Katy was awarded Australian Student of the Year. She has since completed more than 20 advanced training programs across Australia, Germany, the United States and Canada, continually expanding her knowledge of cosmetic tattooing, pigment selection, colour theory, correction techniques and paramedical tattoo procedures.

Katy is also a qualified cosmetic tattoo trainer and assessor. In 2020, she was invited to contribute to the Australian Skills Advisory Board responsible for developing the upgraded national cosmetic tattoo qualification. Her appointment recognised the extensive advanced education and industry experience she had completed beyond the standard training requirements.

Internationally, Katy has been a recognised member of the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals in the United States. She also successfully completed the Society’s Certified Permanent Cosmetic Professional examination program, earning the CPCP credential—an additional professional assessment of cosmetic tattoo knowledge and practice.

Qualifications and experience matter

Cosmetic tattooing introduces pigment into the skin, yet practitioner education and competency can vary considerably. Katy encourages clients to ask about formal qualifications, practical experience and advanced education, as well as the quality and origin of pigments and equipment, infection-control procedures and the practitioner’s understanding of pigment behaviour, colour correction and long-term ageing.

Katy uses carefully selected, professional-quality pigments and devices and follows rigorous safety, hygiene and infection-control practices. Every procedure begins with a consultation, and treatment will only proceed when she believes it is appropriate and likely to benefit the client.

A natural, individual approach

Katy’s work is defined by subtlety, precision and individual design. Each procedure is planned according to the person’s facial morphology, bone structure, natural colouring, existing features and long-term aesthetic goals.

Darwin is an exceptionally diverse community, and facial proportions, skin tones and natural features vary significantly between clients. Katy designs her cosmetic tattoos individually and works freehand wherever appropriate. Her aim is to restore definition, balance and colour while allowing the person’s natural features to remain the focus.

Bespoke eyebrow tattooing

Natural-looking eyebrow tattooing is one of Katy’s favourite areas of cosmetic tattoo. She specialises in fine, hair-imitating strokes and individually designed brows that complement the client’s facial structure.

Katy carefully considers the natural direction of the eyebrow hair, facial symmetry, bone structure and the way the result will soften and age over time. The objective is to create definition without making the eyebrows appear overpowering, particularly when the client is not wearing other makeup.

Lip colour and definition

Katy offers individually customised lip tattooing, ranging from soft enhancement in a natural lip tone to more vivid full-lip colour. Her particular interest is restoring definition to the natural lip border and blending colour for a softer, balanced appearance.

Lip tattooing may be considered for an uneven or indistinct lip border, colour that has faded over time, or suitable areas of scarring and pigment loss. The colour and placement are selected for the individual and the intended healed result.

Some clients already have adequate natural lip volume but feel their lips lack visible shape because the border has lost colour or definition. Carefully selected pigment can make the lips appear more distinct. Cosmetic tattoo changes the appearance of colour and definition; it does not add physical volume. Clients seeking additional volume can discuss that separately with an appropriately qualified medical practitioner.

Eyeliner

Cosmetic eyeliner can be used to subtly define the lash line or create a more noticeable makeup effect. Katy customises the colour, depth and shape according to the client’s eye shape, facial features, personal style and the way the tattoo is expected to age.

Paramedical tattooing and scar camouflage

Katy has extensive experience in paramedical cosmetic tattooing, including scar camouflage, restoration of the appearance of pigment and areola tattooing following breast surgery or mastectomy.

Areola tattooing requires more than selecting and applying a colour. Katy considers the shape and position of the reconstructed breast, the appearance of the surrounding skin, existing scarring and the most appropriate size, tone and design for the individual.

Scar camouflage may be suitable for some mature, stable scars and areas where natural skin pigment has been lost. Results depend on the type, colour, texture and maturity of the scar, as well as the surrounding skin and the individual’s healing response. A consultation is essential to determine whether tattooing is appropriate and what degree of improvement can realistically be expected.

Katy considers how a cosmetic tattoo will look after healing and how it may change as the pigment softens and the client’s face or body naturally ages. Her approach combines principles from her international education with decades of practical experience, with an emphasis on natural-looking results, considered colour selection and long-term suitability.

Every cosmetic and paramedical tattoo procedure requires a consultation. If Katy does not believe a procedure is appropriate or likely to produce a worthwhile result for a particular client, she will not perform it.
