Close view of facial melasma and uneven pigmentation

Brown spots, uneven tone and melasma

Pigmentation & Melasma

Improve freckles, sun spots, post-acne marks, melasma and uneven-looking tone with a careful plan built around the type of pigmentation you have.

How this treatment can help

Brighter, more even-looking skin starts with understanding the pigment

Pigmentation treatment can reduce the contrast of suitable dark marks and help the complexion look clearer, brighter and more even. The key is knowing what created the colour, because a sun spot, post-acne mark and melasma can look similar while responding very differently.

Our experienced skin and laser team examines the pattern, depth, onset and triggers, along with your skin tone, hormones, products, previous treatments and sun exposure. Unexplained or changing spots are referred for medical diagnosis rather than treated cosmetically.

Your pathway may combine pigment-control skincare and daily sun protection with a VI Peel, Pico Genesis, selected Excel V+ laser treatment or supportive facial care. We explain how the chosen treatment targets pigment, what change may look like, and how maintenance helps protect the result—especially for recurrent melasma.

Your treatment experience

What the treatment process looks like

01

Classify

The pattern, colour, depth, history and triggers are assessed. Suspicious, changing or uncertain pigmented lesions are referred for medical diagnosis.

02

Prepare and protect

Sun protection and pigment-control skincare may be required before energy treatment or a peel. A tan, active irritation or poor barrier can delay treatment.

03

Treat conservatively

We select a targeted or full-field option and review the response before escalating. Melasma plans emphasise control and maintenance rather than aggressive heat.

Result example

Improvement depends on the pigment diagnosis

Before-and-after imagery shows what happened for one case. It cannot predict your response, and recurrent conditions such as melasma need ongoing trigger control.

Watch an Enlighten melasma treatment

This Cutera manufacturer video shows one selected melasma case treated with the Enlighten laser. Melasma is recurrent and not every pigment pattern is suitable for laser, so consultation and conservative treatment planning remain essential.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions, answered clearly

These answers explain the general experience. Your consultation is where we confirm what is appropriate for your skin, health and goals.

What is the difference between sun spots and melasma?

Sun spots are usually discrete areas related to cumulative ultraviolet exposure. Melasma is a broader, often symmetrical pattern influenced by light, heat, hormones and inflammation. The two need different treatment strategies.

Can laser cure melasma?

No. Laser may be included in carefully selected plans, but melasma is chronic and recurrent. Aggressive heat or inflammation can worsen it, so sun protection, home care and conservative maintenance are central.

Why might you refuse to laser a brown spot?

Cosmetic lasers should not be used on suspicious or undiagnosed pigmented lesions because treatment can delay diagnosis or obscure change. New, changing, irregular or concerning spots need medical assessment.

How many pigment treatments will I need?

A discrete spot may respond in one or a few sessions, while diffuse pigment and melasma usually need a longer staged plan. Response and recurrence vary.

Will pigment become darker after treatment?

Temporary darkening can be an expected endpoint for some targeted treatments, but post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is also a risk. Skin tone, inflammation, sun and aftercare affect that risk.

What is the most important aftercare?

Follow the specific wound or peel instructions and protect the skin every day from ultraviolet and visible light. Do not pick crusts or peeling skin, and contact the clinic if healing is outside the expected course.

Personalised professional care

Experience matters when treatment is personal

Our qualified and experienced team starts with what concerns you, then selects the treatment, technique and settings around your skin or body—not a one-size-fits-all menu.

Pigmented lesions require accurate identification. Advanced Body Image does not treat suspicious or changing spots as cosmetic pigment, and melasma outcomes cannot be guaranteed.
